The pre-Teut. root *ghol-, *ghel-, which is represented also in Gr. <gk>xol<ghacu>, x<goacu>loj</gk>, and in L. fel, is perhaps the same as that of OE. geolo yellow (:—OTeut. *gel-wo-), L. helvus, Gr. <gk>xlw-r<goacu>j</gk>, the gall being thus named from its colour.
