Kabel
[dik touw of staal]
datering: 1251-1300
ODEE: xiii (Laz<>). -AN., ONF.*cable, var.of OF. chable (mod.câble-Pr.cable = Cat.,Sp.cable, Pg. cabo, It.cappio):-late L.cap(u)lum 'halter'- Arab.h<>abl, assoc.with L. capere 'seize, hold' (cf. HEAVE); perh.however, immed.-Pr. cable, and in any case reinforced by (M)LG., (M)Du. kabel (whence G. kabel, Icel. kabill), of Rom. origin., Bluhme: Nederlands: Lehnwort: nl. < frz.
