The paper explores possible relationships between historical processes at the level of societies and patterns of language variation as they are found by standard variationist sociolinguistics focussing on the role of Copenhagen in Denmark and the role of the institutionalization of the socialization of children as an explanatory factor behind possible age grading patterns.
