The Researcher

Dr. Martin Ramstedt studied Anthropology, European Ethnology, Social Psychology, Prehistory and Indology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Germany, between 1981 and 1997. After having acquired his doctorate in 1997, he became a European Science Foundation Fellow at the International Institute for Asian Studies in Leiden for more than three years.

Having carried out research on cultural policy, nation-building and religion in Indonesia during the past fifteen years, Dr. Ramstedt intended to broaden his horizon by taking a second postdoctoral position at the Meertens Institute in 2000, doing research on "New Forms of Religiosity in the Netherlands".

The new project at the Meertens Instituut has confirmed Dr. Ramstedt’s interest in transnational religious movements and networks, providing him with salient comparative data for his ongoing study of transnational religious movements in Asia. On the basis of his empirical work, he strives to contribute to the wider discourse on "Religion in the Modern World".
